Make-n-Take Mechanics Workshop

When: 8:30am-noon Saturday, September 8
Where: Clayton High School
Host and Presenters: Rex & Debbie Rice, Jim Cibulka

First, Debbie introduced the lab activities.

We used the equipment in a lab setting as our students would.

Rex gave directions for the build.

Lots of construction ensued.

We'll begin by modeling how each device is used in instruction as you perform the student activities. (Student materials will also be provided.)   Then we'll take the rest of the morning to make the devices.

[] Wheel & Axle for Exploring Uniformly Accelerated Motion, $3 each, above. A thin axle through a large disc produces a gradual acceleration that yields excellent experimental results. (You'll want a whole lab set of these.)

[] Normal Force Demonstrator, $5 each, left . A variable incline with attached protractors and a spring scale balance helps students see the relation between incline angle and normal force.

[] Rotated Coordinate Axis Manipulative, $1 each, left. This device aids visualization of rotated coordinate axes used to simplify force analyses involving inclined planes.
